Thatchers Cider Company scoops the Bristol Evening Post Business Award for best family business in 2008.

Thatchers Cider Company scoops the Bristol Evening Post Business Award for best family business in 2008.

Thatchers makes about four million gallons of cider a year in a state-of-the art factory at Myrtle Farm, Sandford, near Churchill, at the foot of the Mendip Hills. It owns nearly 200 acres of orchard in Somerset, and cultivates more than 400 varieties of fruit tree in its exhibition orchard.

Thatchers, which employs 70 staff at its Sandford base, sells 19 different ciders including pear cider and scrumpy.

Turnover has grown from £5 million in 2000 to more than £13m in 2007.

The Best Family Business Award is again one of 10 categories in the 2009 Evening Post Business Awards, which will be given out at a gala ceremony on June 11 at the Marriott City Centre hotel in Bristol.
